PE
Intent
At St Anthony’s Catholic Primary school, we believe that Physical Education (PE) should be fun, safe and challenging. PE is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development. It is also crucial for developing lifelong, transferable skills such as team work, honesty and leadership. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities in order that the children can succeed in Physical Education and in developing life skills. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at St Anthony’s, not only through the sporting skills taught, but also through the underpinning values and disciplines which PE promotes.
As a school where we all strive to be our best, we believe that all learning should be adapted to the needs of all children (SEN, EAL, more able, disadvantaged) and that the curriculum should be carefully planned to take account of everyone in the class so that we can all ‘Do something beautiful for God, each and every day’.
Implementation
PE at St Anthony’s provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including: Invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities.
The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Pupils participate in two hours of high quality PE lessons each week. These should cover two different sporting disciplines each half term. Children are also encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities, both at lunch time – with our qualified coach - and after school – when clubs are provided through a mixture of qualified teachers and qualified coaches.
The children are invited to attend competitive sporting competitions, both within our local area and within our diocesan partnership. These competitions help to improve students wellbeing by increasing confidence and self-esteem. These events are enjoyed by the children.
Children in year 5 swim once a week for half of the year. These lessons are provided by the local council and aim to prepare the children for their national curriculum assessment in swimming.
Impact
We help to motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching which is both engaging in fun. From this, our aim is that children will develop a life-long love of physical activity, sport and fitness, which will help children to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. We equip children with the necessary skills for a love of sport. Children will consequently grow up to live healthy and happy loved utilising the skills and knowledge acquired from Physical Education.
